4 Simple Tips To Get You Started

Now that it's summer out, it doesn't mean your health and fitness have to suffer.

Instead, now is a great time to nourish your body with movement, nutrients, and work towards your health and fitness goals.

Develop strong healthy habits and improve your quality of life with these simple tips.

  1. Drink Water - If you want to take training seriously, which is the way to real change, then you NEED to drink plenty of water. Drinking water has a ton of health benefits. It can help you lose weight, lower levels of stress, improve skin tone, and can help reduce or prevent aches and pains. As a rule of thumb - check your urine, keep it clear or at least a pale yellow. If your urine is a dark yellow you need to drink more water. If you’re not drinking any water, or very little water, I would recommend to start with drinking a litre of water and working your way up to 2 then 3. I usually recommend, for the average person, to drink 3-4 litres of water per day.

  1. Plan Your Nutrition - Nutrition is what our body uses for fuel. If you're feeding your body poorly, then you can expect poor performance during you're training. This leads to poor results. Come up with a plan to help you eat better quality food, rather than just going for the quickest and easiest source of food when you're on the run. Try and eat well-balanced meals, meaning: they have an even amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fats, this way you’ll have plenty of energy and your body will be more prone to losing excess fat stores.

  1. Get Some Sleep - Sleep is the time when our body recovers from all the stress we place on it during our waking hours. If we’re planning on increasing that stress by working out, then we should also plan on increasing the time we spend allowing our body to recover from the added stress. The only way to do that, is to get more quality sleep. A minimum of 6-8 hours is recommended for the average person and 7-10 hours for the person that is physically active. This may be hard to do, but planning ahead and giving yourself adequate rest will go a long way when it comes to your health and fitness.

  1. Shift Your Mindset - There is no finish line! Many people go to the gym with the mindset of: "I only need to workout for a good month", "I’ll do this bootcamp and I’ll be good to go", or "I’ll do this competition to get myself in shape". This mindset will set you up for failure. Being healthy and in shape isn’t a course you take over a month or a few weeks, and then you're done with fitness. Being 'in shape' is a lifestyle you have to actively choose to live, every single day. Plan for the long haul, take it slow and steady, and know that you can do this.

Getting started with a fitness program can seem daunting and intimidating, so start slow and steady and set yourself up for success.
