The teep (push kick) is IMO one of the most underutilized and underrated kicks in striking.
An effective teep can control your opponents distance and the tempo of a fight.
Here are my top 3 reasons why you need to start utilizing the teep in your striking game.
1. Control your opponents distance - keep your opponent at a range where you feel comfortable. If they have good boxing, keep them at the end of your teep! If they are trying to close the distance to clinch when you don't want to - teep! Easier said than done, I know! BUT now is a good time to shut up and go PRACTICE!
2. Set up other strikes - have you ever landed a good teep to your opponents mid-section? What happens next time you bring your knee up? They are most likely ready to brush or catch the kick and counter. When the hands come down, give them a nice punch to the face for dropping their guard!
3. Mix it up - Throw a teep at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of your combinations. A good fighter hides their weapons well and is always unpredictable!
The teep is a very "basic" but effective kick. These are only a few ways to utilize them, there are many, many more!
Great ways to practice are on a bag, partner drills and on pads. Add this "basic" kick to your striking repertoire!
